Talking Mats www.talkingmats.com is an interesting and useful addition to the communication tools used by Elder Homes. Seen here in action with resident of Chamberlain, Miss Russell and May Buckle from Social and Leisure Team.
This simple tool, if used correctly, helps to open up conversations with people, not just by allowing them to express their needs, i.e. I would like a cup of coffee or a biscuit, but their preferences. For example whether they like something, or not or if they are not bothered. This helps to open up conversations and establish things the person wishes to avoid or would like to be actively encouraged to join in with.
